Ok the first word that comes to mind is PRACTICE, if the surface is rocky get some street wheels, they're slightly softer and helps with the rough terrain. Take your board everywhere,( don't be embarred, haters can go FCK themselves ) you never know when you can find a good gap or a staircase, since you are bearly starting, you might want to work on your ollies, make your pops solid and jump really high as soon as you pop, just remember to jump, I can't stress this any further, this will help you through any trick. But most importantly do whatever it takes, don't let distance stop you from going to the skatepark. Ask for rides skate to places, skate, skate on the road, skate, read skate magazines, skate, don't stop skating, skate, skate, skate!
